The Prettiest Plants for Fall

Fall’s color palette is the best of the four seasons, in our humble opinion. The pastels of spring and brights of summer have given way to richer, deeper hues and more fall-like textures.

Fall’s best plants can work in containers, landscape beds, and – sometimes –both! Here’s a look at some of our favorite flowers for fall:

Mums

A fall favorite, there’s no plant that signifies the changing season more than the traditional mum. There’s a large variety of colors, as well as hybrid versions that combine two or three different colors. Mums can be used in your fall planters and then planted in your landscaping beds (if you do so before the first freeze).

Crape Myrtle

More tree-like than plant, crape myrtles offer a variety of bloom colors in the summer and give way to reds, oranges, and yellows in the fall. Plant them in your landscaping beds where they’ll have plenty of room to thrive – they typically grow about 15’ high and spread at least 6’ wide.

Ornamental Kale

Ornamental Kale provides the perfect focal point for your fall containers. They are large, and different varieties provide different looks. From dark greens and purple with frilly leaves, to lighter green with sleek leaves, combining ornamental kale with mums and grasses makes a perfect fall planter.

Marigolds

Marigolds are a late-summer flower that transitions seamlessly to fall. Plant them in full sunshine for the best results. Bonus: they repel bugs like mosquitos while attracting insects that attack and kill aphids.

Asters

When everything else in your garden has reached its prime, asters are just getting started. These flowering plants last well into the fall and spike your garden with shades of blue, pink, lavender, and purple. Plant in full sun for the best blooms.
